Riven / Conceived by Marina Zurita, created in collaboration with Laila Garroni and Josanna Vaz

Riven is a new play in development (NYC Women’s Fund and BAC grantee) based on interviews with Brazilian catadores (waste pickers, who colect and sort recyclable materials as a way of living). The story of Riven centers the interweaving lives of Melina and Alessandra, two black Brazilian catadoras (waste pickers) working at a scrapyard in the city of São Paulo. As these two women sort through piles of waste in the predictable day-to-day of the scrapyard, they face the impacts of a chaotic and unforgiving world outside. Melina and Alessandra must sort through not only the accumulated discards of others, but through the accumulations of their own complex relationship.

Love & Depositions / conceived by Marina Zurita, Acadia Barrengos and Mollye Maxner

Love and Depositions is a deconstruction of Seneca’s Trojan Women. While Seneca’s work tells the story of the aftermath of the Trojan War for the women of Troy, Love & Depositions focuses on the life of a teenage girl obsessed with the Greek myths. Our protagonist searches incessantly for the semblance of Polyxena – a girl in Seneca’s Trojan Women, who is sacrificed in the tomb of Achilles and is the only character with no lines in the play. Love & Depositions becomes a labyrinth inside our protagonist’s mind, who for personal and identitary reasons spends her life in the search for a fictional character who was not given a chance to speak.
